At 6 p.m. today, January 10, the City of DeQuincy, Louisiana, is set to consider a dangerous new ordinance that includes a feeding ban for community cats—a cruel measure that harms cats and criminalizes the compassion of caregivers. The ordinance has been proposed without any input from the citizens and stakeholders of DeQuincy.

Please contact DeQuincy’s mayor and councilmembers TODAY and ask them to vote NO on the ordinance. Let them know that DeQuincy citizens and local animal agencies are ready and eager to help DeQuincy’s cats and community. The public’s voice should always be heard before such laws are introduced.

As a resident of Louisiana, I ask you to vote NO on the proposed ordinance that includes a feeding ban for community cats. I ask that you instead work with local residents, advocates, and the DeQuincy Cat Protection Coalition to build a strong program based in spay and neuter, vaccination of cats, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

We the people of Louisiana care deeply about our cats. I am concerned that local animal agencies and citizens were not consulted before drafting the proposed ordinance. There are practical, evidence-based, and results-oriented programs in place in other cities that can inform our approach to cats outdoors. What’s more, DeQuincy residents will be eager to be part of these programs.

To inform DeQuincy’s efforts, highly qualified cat experts are already sharing their knowledge and resources. Together, we can save cats’ lives and benefit the community, rather than turning to cruel and ineffective approaches like feeding bans. I ask you to not move forward with the ordinance and instead work with advocates and agencies to develop a robust, evidence-based program for our community cats.
